Liverpool turned on the style in their Premier League match against bottom-ranked Swansea, beating the manager-less Swans 5-0 to reclaim fourth spot from Tottenham Hotspur in the process.

After Harry Kane had fired Spurs to a resounding win over Southampton earlier on Tuesday to climb above the Reds in the league table, Liverpool were under pressure to respond and Jurgen Klopp’s men did just that.

Despite resting Sadio Mane for the tie, the hosts were in a rampant mood, especially in the second-half.

Philippe Coutinho had opened the scoring in the 6th minute itself, curling one into the top corner from outside the box with extreme nonchalance, but the Welsh outfit somehow managed not to concede again in the first-half.

Most of that was down to Liverpool’s profligacy, with Roberto Firmino, in particular, culpable of a glaring miss.

At half-time, Anfield was a bit tense as a one-nil lead is next to nothing in the unpredictable environs of the Premier League, but they needn’t have worried for Firmino doubled their lead early on.

Coutinho’s free-kick from deep found him unmarked near the far-post and the striker side-volleyed home in the 52nd minute to calm fears in the Liverpool dugout.

Young fullback Trent Alexander Arnold, who scored a cracking free-kick earlier this season in the UEFA Champions League would then get in on the act to register his first Premier League goal in the 66th minute before Mohamed Salah laid it on a plate for Firmino to score the 4th barely a minute later.

Alex Oxalade Chamberlain would complete the rout seven minutes from time, with Klopp ringing in the changes as the win was a mere formality at that point.

After their eventual 3-3 draw against Arsenal, this was the perfect response from the Reds, who who now host Leicester City on Saturday.

The race for the Premier League title may be effectively over with Manchester City way ahead of the chasing pack but the fact that second-placed Manchester United and third-placed Chelsea are just five and four points ahead, respectively, will give Liverpool hope of giving aforementioned duo a tough fight to finish in the automatic UEFA Champions League qualification slots.

After sacking Paul Clement, if the Swans were looking for their players to respond, they were sorely disappointed and for caretaker-manager Leon Britton, there’s a lot of work to be done if they are to somehow avoid relegation this season.

Currently in 20th place, Swansea are five points from safety and will look to win their first game in five matches when they visit Watford on Saturday.
