Beijing, 4 October
Sania Mirza and Cara Black today shocked top seeded Italians Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci to storm into the summit clash of the China Open, extending their unbeaten run to eight matches now. Sania and Zimbabwe’s Cara, who came into the tournament after winning the Tokyo event, swept aside the challenge of formidable Italians 6-4 6-4 in one hour and 12 minutes.
Sania has been doing well consistently despite not getting a long-term partner. She began the season with Bethanie-Mattek Sands but when the American preferred to focus more in singles, Sania had to look for partners. After playing half the season with Bethanie-Mattek, Sania has teamed up with four different partners — America’s Liezel Huber, Italy’s Flavia Pennetta, China’s Jie Zheng and now Cara.
She reached the US Open semis and won New Haven event with Zheng and triumphed at Tokyo Open with Cara. She won Dubai and Brisbane events with Bethanie-Mattek. Now she has opportunity to win her fifth title of the season. They now face winners of the second semifinal between the pairs of China’s Su-Wei Hsieh and Shuai Peng and Vera Dushevina of Russia and Arantxa Parra Santonja of Spain.

Nadal survives scare: World number two Rafael Nadal staged an extraordinary comeback in his China Open quarterfinal match Friday, keeping alive his hopes of unseating Novak Djokovic at the top of the men’s rankings. The Spanish number two seed in Beijing looked to be heading for a crushing defeat after Fabio Fognini claimed the first set and powered to a 4-1 lead in the second.
But Nadal broke the Italian’s serve in the seventh game, before winning the next three to take the second set 6-4. Fogniniwon the opener of the third set, but Nadal sealed his passage through to the semi-finals with victory in the remaining games. Nadal is aiming to unseat Djokovic at the top of the men’s rankings by making the final in Beijing.

Djokovic breezes through: Defending champion Djokovic progressed to the semi-finals with an impressive 6-1, 6-2 win over American Sam Querry in just 53 minutes. Also, top-ranked Serena Williams brushed aside former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki 6-1, 6-4 to raise her record to 6-1 against the Dane and set up a next-round clash with No. 4-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska.

Bopanna shines: Rohan Bopanna reached his third final of the season when he combined Edourad Roger-Vasselin to get past Treat Huey and Dominic Inglot in straight sets in the ATP Japan Open, here today.
Bopanna and his French partner, seeded fourth, beat the Austrian-Briton combination 6-4 7-6(6) in the semifinals.
