US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday said Washington keeps a close watch on India-Pakistan relations “every single day,” repeating President Donald Trump’s claims that the US played a role in preventing a nuclear escalation between the two neighbours. In an interview with NBC News, Rubio noted that truces are difficult to sustain and can collapse quickly.

While India has insisted the conflict ended in May after Islamabad sought a ceasefire following heavy losses, Pakistan has backed Trump’s claim, giving him credit for solving the India-Pakistan conflict in the aftermath of Pahalgam attack.

“One of the complications of ceasefires is maintaining them, which is very difficult. Every single day, we are keeping an eye on what is happening between Pakistan and India,” Rubio said.

Talking about the the Russia-Ukraine truce deal, he said, “the only way to have a ceasefire is for both sides to agree to stop firing at one another. And the Russians just haven’t agreed to that.”

“Ceasefires can fall apart very quickly, especially after a three-and-a-half-year war (in Ukraine) like what we’re facing now, but I don’t think anyone disagrees that the ideal here, what we’re aiming for is not some permanent ceasefire. What we’re aiming for here is a peace deal so there’s not a war now and there’s not a war in the future,” Rubio added.

US President Donald Trump reiterated his claims of mediating the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan as well as helping to resolve several other global conflicts.

Trump on Sunday took to his social media, slamming American radio host and author Charlamagne Thank God. He said that the author knows nothing about him and what he has done, including ending “5 wars”

“Like just ending 5 Wars, including a 31-year bloodbath between the Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, where Seven Million people have died, and there was no end in sight. He didn’t know that, or India and Pakistan or wiping out Iran’s nuclear capabilities, or closing the horrendous open Border, or creating the greatest economy,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
