Videos circulating on social media showed protesters breaking police barricades and hurling stones at security personnel.

The situation escalated when police resorted to tear gas and water cannons to control the crowd, but the measures failed to contain the unrest. Security forces ultimately opened fire, resulting in the deaths of 19 people on Monday.

By Tuesday, Nepal was in turmoil as protesters set fire to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s private residence in Balkot, Bhaktapur and vandalised the house of Nepali Congress chief Sher Bahadur Deuba. PM Oli resigned on Tuesday after hundreds of protesters entered his office shouting anti-government slogans and demanding accountability for deaths yesterday.

On day 2 of the protests, the Nepal Parliament was set on fire. A huge cloud of smoke was seen coming out of the Parliament building after it was set ablaze by the demonstrators.

Protesters dance and celebrated as the private residence of former PM KP Sharma Oli, in Bhaktapur, burned. The Nepali PM resigned this afternoon amid demonstrations against the Government over alleged corruption.

Indian flights to Kathmandu have been cancelled following the closure of Nepal’s airport. Security has been heightened outside the Embassy of Nepal in Delhi.
