Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday, emphasised the need for reforms in global institutions while addressing the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China.
“We are continuously working on wide-ranging reforms, which are opening up new opportunities for development and international cooperation in our country,” PM Modi said.

He stressed the importance of reforms in global institutions, including the United Nations. “The aspirations of the Global South cannot be confined to outdated frameworks, which would be a grave injustice to future generations,” he said.
PM Modi highlighted the SCO’s potential to guide multilateralism and an inclusive world order. “The SCO can be a guiding force for multilateralism and an inclusive world order,” he emphasised.
PM Modi welcomed the establishment of four new centres under the SCO to address contemporary challenges such as organised crime, drug trafficking, and cybersecurity.
The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the coordination and cooperation among SCO member countries and wished the next chair, Kyrgyzstan’s President Sadyr Japarov, success in his role.
Advocating reforms in the Call for UN, PM Modi stated that the organisation needs to adapt to the changing global landscape. “On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, we can collectively call for UN reform,” he said.
The SCO Summit provides a platform for member countries to discuss regional and global issues, and PM Modi’s address highlighted India’s commitment to cooperation and reform in the multilateral system.
