A devastating fire swept through one of the largest slums in Dhaka on Thursday, destroying hundreds of homes and leaving thousands displaced, Bangladesh police said.

However, there were no immediate reports of any casualties, Xinhua news agency reported.

The slum, called Korail-Boubajar, shelters about 300,000 residents.

Eighteen fire fighting units rushed to the spot at about 2.00 a.m., the police said.

The blaze was doused at about 7.00 a.m., said a firefighter, adding the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

About 500 homes made of scrap sheet iron, plastic and cardboard were destroyed fully, he said.
