Amid tensions between the United States and its European allies over the issue of Greenland, US President Donald Trump on Tuesday leaked French President Emmanuel Macron’s private message to him.
In what appears a screenshot of two messages, Macron told Trump that he doesn’t understand what the US president is doing on Greenland.

“We are totally in line on Syria. We can do great things on Iran. I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland,” Macron said in the message.

He further urged the US president to “build great things”. Macron said that he can set up a G7 meeting on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum 2026 in Davos.
“I can invite the ukrainians, the danish, the syrians and the russians in the margins..,” the French President said and invited Trump for a stopover in Paris. “Let us have a dinner together in Paris together on thursday before you go back to the us.”
The outreach from the French President came amid Trump’s tariff threat to France and seven other European nations for their opposition to the US take over of Greenland, an autonomous region of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Trumo has announced 10 per cent tariffs on eight European countries – Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Finland – from February 1. He said that tariffs will be subsequently raised to 25 per cent from June 1 if a deal on US complete control on Greenland is not reached.
While Macron has not directly responded to Trump’s move to leak his messages, he said that pressure from the US for trade agreements that “undermine our export interests, demand maximum concessions and openly aim to weaken and subordinate Europe, combined with an endless accumulation of new tariffs are “fundamentally unacceptable”.
Addressing the World Economic Forum in Davos, Macron also denounced the use of tariffs “as leverage against territorial sovereignty”.
He said that for France and Europe national sovereignty and independence are not old an old-fashioned way to live and because of these principals his country sent troops to Greenland
Macron says that France and Europe are “obviously” attached to national sovereignty and independence.
He says this is “not an old fashioned” way to live, but rather not to “totally forget” lessons from World War Two, and to remain committed to co-operation.
The French president says that it is because of these principles that his nation have decided to join the military exercises in Greenland “without threatening anyone but just supporting an ally in another European country – Denmark”.
Trump is also scheduled to address the World Economic Forum on January 21. He is widely expected to speak on the issue of Greenland, which may have serious repercussions on the future of NATO.
