WPI inflation rises to 10-month high of 1.81% in January on costlier manufactured goods

The wholesale price index (WPI) inflation eased to 2.31 per cent in January, down from 2.37 per cent in December 2024, according to data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Friday.
The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index increased from 4.65 per cent in March, 2024 to 5.52 per cent in April, 2024.
The government’s data attribute the positive rate of inflation to an increase in prices of food articles, crude petroleum & natural gas, electricity, machinery & equipment and motor vehicles, trailers & semi-trailers, etc.
The Wholesale Price Index for primary articles declined by 0.57 per cent to 173.0 (provisional) from 174.0 for the month of January 2023. The prices of food articles (0.45 per cent) increased in February 2023 as compared to January 2023.
Food inflation in November stood at 3.94 per cent, against 6.37 per cent in the previous month.
In the manufactured products category, inflation stood at 2.12 per cent in October, compared to 1.61 per cent in September.

In fuel and power basket, deflation stood at 13.60 per cent in June, against 19.83 per cent in the previous month.
