Sakurajima volcano, located in Kagoshima Prefecture in southwestern Japan, erupted early Sunday, sending a massive plume of ash and smoke up to 4,400 metres (2.73 miles) into the sky, cancelling dozens of flights.
As a result of that eruption, the Anak Krakatau, which now rises just over 110 metres above sea level, lost around 200 meters in height.
The eruption of Merapi in the main island of Java was detected 2 km from the crater, according to the report.
The Institute - which on Sunday raised the alert to level four on a scale of five - added that the volcano has caused 212 earthquakes, 81 of them of sufficient intensity to be felt, and that the ash emitted has covered several surrounding municipalities.
White Island is the tip of an undersea volcano about 30 miles from New Zealand’s North Island and was a popular tourist destination before the eruption.
The volcano erupted on Monday afternoon when 47 tourists were visiting the privately-owned island located 48 km east of North Island.
The announcement comes as attempts to recover the eight people on the island who are missing, presumed dead and likely to be covered in ash.
