Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Atul Bora tabled “The Uniform Civil Code, Assam, Bill, 2026” in the Assembly during the ongoing session. The proposed legislation is expected to be discussed and taken up for passage on May 27.
The strong assertion came ahead of the first Cabinet meeting of the new government, signalling that key ideological and governance priorities of the BJP will remain central to Assam’s political roadmap.
The legislation seeks to standardise civil laws across communities by mandating registration of marriages and live-in relationships, ensuring equal inheritance rights, and introducing penalties for violations.
The concept of a UCC envisions a single set of civil laws governing all citizens in matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, regardless of religion.
The Chhattisgarh Sarva Adivasi Samaj (CSAS) has started a protest against UCC and said that the central government should not be in a rush to implement a Uniform Civil Code as it could threaten the identity and traditional practices of tribals who follow customary laws.
According to sources, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that a special Vidhan Sabha session may also be convened on the UCC, if necessary.
The committee has been tasked to hold talks with constitutional experts, intellectuals and Sikh community leaders.
Previously, the AIMPLB had passed a resolution at its executive meeting saying that the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) was not possible as it would be an 'unnecessary' Act.
Besides IUML the meeting was attended by two factions of the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, factions of the Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Muslim Education Society, and the Muslim Service Society.
