Earlier, the External Affairs Minister attended the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting Outreach Session on Maritime Security and Prosperity, where he underlined India’s approach to maritime security through the MAHASAGAR outlook, Indo-Pacific cooperation, and its role as a first responder in the maritime domain.
Amid growing Chinese assertiveness on maritime issues, India and the ASEAN on Thursday reaffirmed the importance of maintaining and promoting peace, stability, maritime safety and security, freedom of navigation and overflight in the region.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Quad leaders expressed serious concern over the situation in the East and South China Seas and reaffirmed that maritime disputes must be resolved peacefully and in accordance with international law, as reflected in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
India and Singapore have called for peaceful resolution of disputes in the South China Sea, emphasising the importance of maintaining peace, security, and 'freedom of navigation' in and overflight above the South China Sea in accordance with international law, UNCLOS.
The leaders underlined the importance of cooperation in ensuring safe, effective and affordable access to Covid-19 vaccines.
