Madurantakam MLA Maragatham Kumaravel, Dharapuram MLA Sathyabama, and Perundurai MLA Jayakumar submitted their resignation letters to Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat before later meeting Minister Aadhav Arjuna to officially join the TVK camp.
The TVK currently holds 107 seats in the Assembly after Vijay resigned from the Trichy East constituency and retained Perambur. With support from the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML, along with expelled Amma Makkal Munnettra Kazagam (AMMK) MLA Kamaraj, the coalition’s effective strength rose to 121 members.
Quoting Abraham Lincoln’s famous definition of democracy as a government “of the people, by the people and for the people,” Vijay said legislative institutions must remain rooted in democratic principles and public welfare.
According to an official notification issued by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Secretariat, the first sitting of the newly constituted House commenced at 9.30 am in the Legislative Assembly Chamber at the Secretariat in Chennai. All newly elected members were directed to attend the session and carry their election certificates for the oath-taking ceremony.
Vijay’s party secured 108 seats in the Assembly elections. The party also received support from alliance partners, including the Congress, which won 5 seats, along with the Communist Party of India (2), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (2), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (2), and the Indian Union Muslim League (2).
The Governor has appointed C Joseph Vijay as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and invited him to form the Ministry.
The resignation comes against the backdrop of a major political shift in the state. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, emerged as the single largest party, securing 107 seats in the 234-member assembly, just 11 short of the majority mark. The DMK, which had been in power, was reduced to 59 seats, marking a sharp decline.
In a letter to CEC Gyanesh Kumar, VIjay said that thousands of voters are stranded at bus terminals in Chennai, and similarly in other metro cities across Tamil Nadu, with no buses or alternative public transport available to reach their designated polling booths.
