“Thiru C. Joseph Vijay, called on the Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu today (9.5.2026) at Lok Bhavan and submitted a letter informing about his election as the leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam Legislature party. He has also submitted the letters received from the Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Indian Union Muslim League, extending their support to form the Government under his leadership,” the release stated.

The Governor has appointed C Joseph Vijay as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and invited him to form the Ministry.

“The swearing-in ceremony will be held at Nehru Stadium, Chennai on 10th May 2026 at 10 A.M.,” the Lok Bhavan said.

Vijay has also been mandated to prove his majority on the floor of the House on or before May 13.

TNCC President K Selvaperunthagai, CPI State Secretary M Veerapandian, CPI(M)’s K Shanmugam, IUML legislators Syed Farooq Basha, and AM Shahjahan and VCK general secretary Vanni Arasu accompanied Vijay during his meeting with the Governor.

VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan, however, skipped the meeting with Governor and nominated party general secretary Vanni Arasu to join the TVK chief to the Lok Bhavan.

According to Lok Bhavan, during his earlier meeting with the Governor, Vijay reportedly could not prove he had enough numbers to be invited to form the government.

However, after the drama and suspense, the TVK Chief has managed to secure the numbers and is likely to be formally invited to form the government.

Earlier, some reports suggested that DMK and AIADMK were in talks to stitch together an alliance to keep Vijay out of power. However, the smaller allies of the DMK objected to having an alliance with the AIADMK, which is a partner of the BJP.
