Quoting Abraham Lincoln’s famous definition of democracy as a government “of the people, by the people and for the people,” Vijay said legislative institutions must remain rooted in democratic principles and public welfare.
According to an official notification issued by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Secretariat, the first sitting of the newly constituted House commenced at 9.30 am in the Legislative Assembly Chamber at the Secretariat in Chennai. All newly elected members were directed to attend the session and carry their election certificates for the oath-taking ceremony.
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has directed the new government to prove its majority on or before May 13, setting the stage for intense political activity inside the Assembly.
The oath-taking ceremony drew large crowds, senior political leaders, film personalities and party supporters from across the state. Vijay, popularly known as “Thalapathy,” led TVK to a historic electoral victory that ended nearly six decades of political dominance by the DMK and AIADMK formations in Tamil Nadu.
Vijay’s party secured 108 seats in the Assembly elections. The party also received support from alliance partners, including the Congress, which won 5 seats, along with the Communist Party of India (2), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (2), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (2), and the Indian Union Muslim League (2).
Addressing the southern regional conference of DMK Youth Wing functionaries in Virudhunagar, Stalin said that despite Tamil Nadu ranking among the top states in development indices, the Union Budget offered “virtually nothing” to the state.
"Yet another betrayal by the Prime Minister. Even before his speech made before farmers could vanish and his visit to Coimbatore could become a thing of past, the Union Government has turned down our request to enhance moisture content in paddy for procurement from the present 17 percent to 22 percent, in view of the monsoon rains," he wrote on his 'X' timeline.
Periyar was an honorific bestowed on EV Ramasamy, who championed gender equality and fought against Brahmin hegemony, taking the Tamils towards modernity.
The actor also thanked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin who had wished him for the unique honour.
He requested people to wash their hands with soap at regular intervals while at home and in office.
