The 77-year-old Congress leader chose to forgo contesting another election to retain her Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, which she had represented for five consecutive terms since 2004.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge chaired the maiden meeting of the CEC, in presence of Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and party's general secretary in charge of Organisation KC Venugopal, and other senior leaders, at the party headquarters here.
The Congress party said that the decision was taken by the party high command and Sonia Gandhi too wanted to contest from Rajasthan.
Neither the BJP fielded a third candidate, nor did the Opposition Congress try to play any politics till the end of the last day of withdrawal of nominations.
