A quiet but consequential shift has just taken place in how India understands inflation. The latest retail inflation reading, the first under a revamped price index, is not merely another data point for economists to debate.
The year-on-year inflation rate, based on the All India Consumer Price Index (CPI), stood at 1.33%, up slightly from 0.71% in November but still well within the comfort zone.
According to the data released by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on Tuesday, there is a decline of 55 basis points in the headline inflation of July 2025 in comparison to June 2025.
All India inflation based on General CPI is lowest for the month of May 2024 after May 2023. It is less than 6% since September 2023, the government data said.
The annual inflation rate based on the all India Consumer Price Index (CPI) number stands at 4.83 per cent for April over the same month last year, the government data said on Monday.
The inflation also eased in March from February’s 5.09%.
As per the data released by the government, the rural inflation came at 5.34 per cent in February.
Vegetable inflation registered a rate of 17.7 per cent, while the inflation for fuel and light experienced a contraction of (-)0.77 per cent.
