Knee injury jeopardises Ashwin’s Big Bash League debut

Ashwin, who was set to become the first Indian male cricketer to feature in the BBL as a full-season signing, will now miss the tournament’s initial phase.
Ashwin, the former India off-spinner with 765 wickets across formats, will turn out for the Thunder in the upcoming BBL season after completing his stint at the UAE’s ILT20, which finishes on January 5, 2026.
While several India women’s cricketers have played in the WBBL, BCCI rules had until now prevented India men from joining overseas leagues.
Ashwin, 39, has listed a base price of USD 120,000, making him the only player on the long list to be valued in six figures.
The BCCI doesn't allow any current player in Indian international or domestic cricket to feature in overseas T20 leagues, and hence Ashwin’s retirement from IPL opens the door for him to explore opportunities across the other T20 leagues across the globe.
Continuing from where he left in the first innings, Jadeja, who took a fifer on day 1, once again tormented the Kiwi batters on a crumbling surface which according to his long-time spin twin Ashwin was slower than expected.
In seven innings at this venue in Tests, Ashwin now has two hundreds and another fifty-plus score.
Recalling his interaction with Gambhir during his first full Test series for India in 2012, Ashwin revealed that the opening batter was one of the very few from outside his home state of Tamil Nadu to give him a lot of confidence as a new-comer.
As part of the deal, the 37-year-old Ashwin is all set to take charge of the Chennai Super Kings High Performance Centre, coming up Navalur, in the outskirts of Chennai, and expected to be fully operational ahead of the start of IPL 2025 season.
The 37-year-old also revealed that he was not able to complete his action the way he wanted to because of an abdominal injury in the first half of IPL 2024.
