The investigation began during Operation Hardball, a joint anti-gang crackdown by the FBI and Canadian authorities, which uncovered alleged links between a serving Punjab Police officer and overseas gang networks.

The operation was jointly carried out by Counter Intelligence (CI) Patiala and the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC), SAS Nagar.
