President Macron, who declared on taking office that he’s beholden to no particular ideology, found – and took – the opportunity to provide a French flavour to Europe’s stand on major foreign policy issues without letting historic allegiances, customs, or his own inexperience get in the way of his ambitions.

Macron meets von der Leyen as France kicks off EU Council Presidency

Von der Leyen recalled the solidarity between European countries during the pandemic. She said that over 70 per cent of the EU's adult population have now been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and that the EU aims to donate and deliver 1.7 billion vaccine doses around the world by the middle of this year.

Declining fortunes

The latest Gallup poll has indicated that Biden’s score of 43 per cent ~ among all voters ~ had not changed since last September. Having started his innings at the White House on 57 per cent, his ratings remained at around 50 per cent till the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan last August and the takeover by the Taliban.

Slovenia takes over EU presidency

Prime Minister Janez Jansa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted the EU's post-Covid recovery as a major issue that Slovenia's EU presidency will deal with.
