Broader indices underperformed the main indices with Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices shed 2 each. The market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies fell by more than Rs 8 lakh crore to Rs 441 lakh crore.
At the close, the Sensex settled 1,068.74 points, or 1.28 per cent, lower at 82,225.92, while the broader Nifty ended at 25,424.65, down 288.35 points, or 1.12 per cent.
At close, the Sensex was down 1065.78 points or 1.28% at 82,180.47, and the Nifty was down 353 points or 1.38% at 25,232.50.
It was a total bloodbath on Dalal Street as the Nifty 50 tanked 906.95 points, or 3.96 per cent at 21,997.50, while the Sensex nosedived 2,792.89 points, or 3.71per cent at 72,571.80 at 11:30 am.
The carnage on the D-Street eroded investor wealth by Rs 11.42 lakh crore to Rs 126 lakh crore, exchange data showed.
At 2.40 p.m., the index was trading at 32,537.45, lower by 3,159.95 points or 8.85 per cent from the previous close. So far it has touched an intra-day low of 32,530.05 points.
