The excise revenue is mainly accrued from Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) on and off shops, breweries and distillery units.
Moving the demand for grants for his department in the Assembly, Electricity, Prohibition and Excise Minister V. Senthilbalaji said that TASMAC fetched a tax revenue of Rs 33,811.14 crore last fiscal, up from Rs.33,133.24 crore earned in FY20.
In a government order dated 29 December the prohibition and excise department has granted permission to liquor shops to remain open till midnight on 31 December and permitted bars and event organisers who are license holders to serve liquor till 1 a.m. on the same night.
This weekend, with Saturday (Independence Day) and Sunday being holidays, the sales almost touched Rs 250 crore.
