A new chapter for cricket in the United States began on Wednesday, as the groundbreaking ceremony for the Knight Riders Cricket Ground was held in Pomona, California, with ICC chief executive Sanjog Gupta describing the venue as “cricket’s home for LA28.” The venue is expected to play a key role in the lead-up to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where cricket will return after 128 years.
Kirti Azad raised concerns over the move, stating that sports and sportspersons should remain above religion or caste.
India sealed their second successive T20 World Cup crown, and third overall, with a commanding 96-run victory over New Zealand in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
After the victory, the players expressed a desire to meet Shah and acknowledge the role his leadership played in strengthening cricket in the region during his tenure as secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Shah described his visit as “productive and inspiring”, and acknowledged the long road ahead.
The 36-year old succeeds Greg Barclay to become the youngest member of the apex board.
Her post, although framed as a congratulatory message, appeared to be laced with a sharp undertone as she commented on Jay Shah's rise to the position of ICC chairman.
From starting as a young administrator in Gujarat to becoming one of the most influential figures in global cricket, Jay Shah has played a pivotal role in the evolution of the sport, in India and at the global level.
“I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council," Shah said in a statement.
