The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Friday announced the name of its president in its 85-year history with Kalyan Chaubey defeating the legendary Bhaichung Bhutia in the election for the top post.
The Group C game was the 40th and final of the Group stages, with the quarterfinals scheduled in Kolkata between September 9 to 12.
Second-half strikes from Youssef Atriss and Sergio Barboza Junior ensured RUFC claimed the second spot in Group B. Mumbai City FC had already qualified as group toppers.
Pedro Martin scored for the winner in the 83rd minute of the game. Odisha FC thus finished Group D with 12 points from four games and headed to Kolkata for the knockouts.
The first half saw six goals as East Bengal FC scored through Sumeet Passi (17', 34') and Silva (22') but Mumbai City FC came back from behind to make it 3-3 through goals from Greg Stewart (27') and Lalianzuala Chhangte (36', 43').
Spaniard Saul Crespo scored a brace while Jerry got the third; to hand the Juggernauts a third successive win in the tournament. All the goals came in the first half.
In order to give the Blasters all three points, Mohammed Aimen scored twice (in the 28th and 90th minutes) while Muhammed Ajsal scored once (in the 55th minute).
At a meeting held in the national capital on Wednesday in which representatives from 25 out of the 36 state associations were present, a decision was taken to unanimously elect former India goalkeeper and Bengal BJP leader Kalyan Chaubey as the next AIFF President.
Sources close to the development told IANS that his nomination was proposed by the Andhra Football Association and seconded by Rajasthan Football Association.
It seems that BJP and Congress have joined hands to run the AIFF as Kalyan Chaubey from BJP and NA Haris from Congress have reached an agreement for the post of president and vice-president posts.
