28% rise in Indian Bison population in Odisha forest
The latest census that concluded on 7 January found the overall population at 848, including 235 Juveniles (27% of total population). 848 Gaurs were spotted in as many as 69 herds.

Authorities of Hirakud Wildlife Division have published the Census data of Indian Bison (Gaur) or "Gayala" in Odiya of Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary conducted from 11 to 13 May.
The Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary in Odisha’s dense forest cover and innumerable water inlets spread across 353 square kilometer area is home to 659 Indian Bison, a schedule-1 animal protected under Wildlife Protection Act, according to the maiden census of these animals.
