Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Saturday mounted a strong criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning the circumstances under which the India-US trade agreement was announced allegedly compromising the national interests.
In an official statement, the party said Kharge and Gandhi would lead the programme being organised to safeguard farmers’ interests and amplify concerns over provisions in the trade deal that it believes could harm India’s agricultural community.
He also indicated that India’s free trade agreements (FTAs) with the United Kingdom and Oman are expected to be implemented in April, while the trade pact with New Zealand is likely to come into force in September.
The government on Monday claimed the India–US trade agreement marks a major milestone in India’s global trade engagement, securing sustained preferential access for Indian exports in the US market valued at over USD 30 trillion.
