The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) rescued 182 pilgrims stranded on a grounded ferry off Kakdwip in West Bengal on Tuesday.
Exercise "SAREX-2022" was reviewed by Indian Coast Guard chief VS Pathania along with other agencies and foreign participants. ICG Dornier planes demonstrated ways of rescuing passengers from ships and aircraft during emergencies.
The vessel ‘Kamla Devi’ was designed in line with the ‘Make in India’ programme and developed in-house by GRSE as per requirements specified by ICG.
On realising the presence of Indian Coast Guard ship, the boats increased speed and entered shallow waters to evade capture. The ship chased the boats but could not go near due to depth restrictions. Hence, it shared the information with one of ICG's air cushion vehicles operating in area. The coordinated operation resulted in apprehension of three Bangladeshi boats along with 88 poachers.
The ICG began with just seven surface platforms in 1978 and has grown into a formidable force with 158 ships and 70 aircraft in its inventory. It is likely to achieve targeted force levels of 200 surface platforms and 80 aircraft by 2025, said a statement by the ICG
The Indian Coast Guard in coordination with Marine Police at Paradip provided shelter to the boat and its crew on humanitarian grounds. The crew was reported to be safe and healthy. The boat along with 20 fishermen was formally handed over by ICGS ‘Sarojini Naidu’ to Bangladesh Coast Guard ship ‘Shadhin Bangla’ at IMBL on 09 January 2022.
According to the ministry in the last one year, ICG carried out 70 medical evacuations, conducted 555 search and rescue operations and saved the lives of more than 1,090 people.
ICG Ship Anmol on routine deployment was diverted for assistance. The Coast Guard aircraft located the fishing boat and vectored the ICG ship to the location. In a sea-air coordinated operation, braving the rough seas and prevailing cyclonic conditions, the ICG ship Anmol rescued all 11 crew safely from the stranded fishing boat.
The services of the ICG air station, at Ratnagiri, are being extended to Indian Navy and Indian Air Force aircraft for airlifting of NDRF teams, relief material and facilitating rescue operations across the affected regions.
