Despite restrictions and time limits imposed by the administration, the city reverberated with the deafening sound of firecrackers well past midnight on Diwali night, defying the law and repeated appeals for restraint.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) on Saturday was 268, up from 254 on Friday and 245 on Thursday.
Carrying dangerous goods such as firecrackers, gas cylinders, acid, petrol, kerosene or similar inflammable materials in trains is strictly prohibited under the Railways Act, 1989, and offenders are liable to imprisonment of up to three years.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of the Delhi Police raided a house in Uttam Nagar and arrested Gaurav Gupta, recovering 77 kg of firecrackers from his residence, the officer said.
