The Election Commission of India on Thursday announced the immediate withdrawal of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) following the completion of the 2026 Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and the Union Territory of Puducherry, after the formal declaration of results by Returning Officers in the respective states.

In his acceptance speech in Stockholm, CEC Kumar emphasized a forward-looking agenda focused on strengthening electoral integrity worldwide, declaring, “India’s Chairmanship will be decisive, ambitious and action oriented.”
He stressed that elections must be fair, transparent and free from any doubt or complaint, a responsibility that rests squarely with the Election Commission.
The officials, however, said around 85% of the total 15.44 crore voter enumeration forms in the state have been digitized so far.
Singhvi said that the “determination of citizenship lies exclusively with the Central government under Sections 8 and 9 of the Citizenship Act or with the courts and Foreigners Tribunals,” and not with ECI acting through Booth Level Officers (BLOs).
The Election Commission of India (ECI) expects that roughly 43.30 lakh names will be dropped from West Bengal's draft voters' list, scheduled for publication on December 16, based on the current pace of digitising enumeration forms submitted by booth-level officers (BLOs).
