The Election Commission of India’s recent announcement of by-elections to three Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal, which fell vacant following the resignations of Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Sushmita Dev and Prakash Chik Baraik — the three Trinamool Congress MPs who stepped down after the party’s debacle in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections — has brought the focus back on the former MPs and the BJP’s plans for them.
"The Election Commission has heard our case today, and now we are waiting. We are in our fight," Natarajan told reporters in Delhi.
The 1998-batch IAS officer of the West Bengal cadre is replacing Manoj Kumar Agarwal, who was earlier appointed as the state's new Chief Secretary.
According to officials, Punjab currently has around 2.14 crore registered voters, and the revision exercise aims to update the electoral database ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections in the state.
The total number of voters in the SIR draft rolls has now come down to 12.56 crore from 15.44 crore, marking the deletion of around 18.70% of names.
Although the schedule has not yet been announced for the polls, the ECI has repeatedly consulting with the officials on the security measures and other related matters to be taken for the upcoming assembly elections.
Amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has identified at least 14 voters holding Indian EPIC (Elector Photo Identity Card) cards while simultaneously possessing Bangladeshi passports, raising serious concerns over voter list integrity and illegal infiltration.
The Election Commission on Friday said the number of “logical discrepancies” detected in the electoral rolls of West Bengal during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) has come down significantly, from 1.36 crore to 94.49 lakh, a reduction of 41.51 lakh cases.
"Citizens can now give their suggestions till the 10th of January, 2026," the ECI said in a statement on Saturday.
