The Election Commission of India’s recent announcement of by-elections to three Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal, which fell vacant following the resignations of Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Sushmita Dev and Prakash Chik Baraik — the three Trinamool Congress MPs who stepped down after the party’s debacle in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections — has brought the focus back on the former MPs and the BJP’s plans for them.
"The Election Commission has heard our case today, and now we are waiting. We are in our fight," Natarajan told reporters in Delhi.
The 1998-batch IAS officer of the West Bengal cadre is replacing Manoj Kumar Agarwal, who was earlier appointed as the state's new Chief Secretary.
According to officials, Punjab currently has around 2.14 crore registered voters, and the revision exercise aims to update the electoral database ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections in the state.
As over 3.26 crore voters would receive notices regarding their inclusion in the voter list, the ECI has extended the time for claims and objections from February to March 6.
Briefing meetings were held in three batches on Thursday and Friday at the ECI for 1444 officers, including 714 general observers, 233 police observers and 497 expenditure observers for the Assembly polls in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
In a statement, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale said ECI officials had now acknowledged that software-related errors were responsible for the deletion of names of legitimate voters from the electoral rolls.
A total of 1,444 officers—comprising 714 General Observers, 233 Police Observers, and 497 Expenditure Observers—are participating in the sessions held in three batches at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) in New Delhi on February 5 and 6.
He sarcastically remarked that it now seems as if the Election Commission's flag should be hoisted on the houses of BJP members, making them presiding officers and turning their houses into polling booths.
