The decisions are in response to long-standing requests from several states and are aimed at strengthening protection for farmers against sudden, localised, and severe crop damage.
On Monday, their protest coincided with Chouhan’s visit to Bhopal, where he addressed the convocation ceremony of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) and lauded various farmer welfare initiatives, including the crop insurance scheme, being implemented by the Narendra Modi-led Union government.
The state government has started releasing funds for farmers’ crops insurance schemes.
With this important decision, crops of more than 40 lakh farmers of the state will get insurance cover in the event of a natural calamity.
In the district 45,672 potato farmers had bought crop insurance coverages for their potato cultivation.
A portion of the farmers, Jagannath Chatterjee, deputy director of agriculture in Burdwan East, said: “Some couldn’t avail crop insurance for not having proper documents of their farmlands and some faced problems with the dearth of validation of their share croplands here. Still, with the present consequences, we insist absolute crop insurance for the entire cultivators.”
The government on Wednesday made its flagship crop insurance schemes voluntary for farmers with existing crop loans or those willing to take new ones.
