India transformed, stronger, indeed a major power: Chinese paper

Writing an Opinion piece in the newspaper on 2nd January, Zhang Jiadong, director of the Center for South Asian Studies at Fudan University concludes: “India is indeed a major power, and rapid changes in internal and external strategies pose challenges to both itself and the international community.”

China’s challenge

China is aging at a rate few nations have matched historically. It will take just 20 years for the proportion of the elderly population to double from 10 to 20 per cent (2017-2037).

Thoughtless actions often have strong reactions

The takeover was brutal. Figures of protestor casualties vary from a few hundred to a few thousand with thousands more injured. Many fled abroad to escape prosecution. China to date refuses to release details of casualties.

Risk management

Set against the backdrop of intensified geostrategic competition between the USA and China, however, this is an eventuality all countries and not just the dramatis personae must factor into their strategic calculus going ahead.
