With Mamata Banerjee heading the star campaigner roster and candidates spread across five regions, TMC is mounting its most organised electoral effort in Assam to date.
The BJP on Thursday announced 88 candidates for the April-9 Assam Assembly elections under a new NDA seat-sharing arrangement: BJP 89 seats, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) 26, and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) 11 in the 126-member Assembly. In 2021, the NDA—then comprising the BJP, AGP and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL)—had won 75 seats.
The oath of office was administered by Mukesh Kumar Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam, following formal approval from the Governor.
According to the results shared by the Assam State Election Commission, BPF has won 28 seats, while Pramod Boro-led United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) won 7 seats, and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 5 seats.
In Shrirampur, BPF’s Mukleshwar Rahman has built a commanding lead with over 7,400 votes against UPPL’s Wilson Hasdoi, who has polled just 2,200.
Despite worries that the Citizenship Bill would impact its chances, the BJP did remarkably well in the Assam panchayat poll.
