Air India has reduced frequencies on several international routes for three months as rising fuel costs and geopolitical tensions increase pressure on airline operations globally.
Tata Group-owned Air India is likely to reduce its international flight operations after posting a loss of nearly Rs 20,000 crore in FY26, amidst rising aviation fuel costs, according to senior officials.
The revision in fuel surcharges is expected to increase airfares; however, Air India said it will continue to absorb a significant portion of the increased cost.
The Airbus A320 was coming from Bagdogra and reportedly had 148 people, including six crew members on board.
Air India Boeing 787-8 aircraft’s engine fuel control switches transitioned from ‘RUN’ to ‘CUTOFF’ position within three seconds after lift-off, leading to the plane crashing in just 34 seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad on June 12, according to the initial probe report by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) released early on Saturday.
Despite the heavy shadow of the accident, veteran actor and MP Shabana Azmi and her husband, lyricist Javed Akhtar, made a public gesture of faith in Air India.
“There’s so much unrest in the world,” she shared in the post. “Every flight feels heavier now, not just because of the skies, but because of the headlines we carry with us.”
The Nayak of Bollywood, Anil Kapoor traveled through Air India. Making his journey even more special, he received a sweet note from the staff on the flight.
He termed the plane crash a "rare case”, wherein over 270 people were killed. "It has never happened that both engines have shut down together," the minister said, referring to pilots and experts’ views that a dual engine failure may have led to the crash.
