As his 13-year-old career with Manchester United came to a close, Wayne Rooney thanked the club, the administration and fans for their unwavering support in a touching post.

The 31-year-old striker uploaded a series of images of himself on his Instagram profile, with the caption: “Just want to say a massive thank you to everybody at @manchesterunited. Thanks to the boards over the years, the managers and coaches I've played under, the staff I've worked with, the team mates I've played alongside, and finally the amazing fans that I've been lucky enough to have played for. Thanks for the memories.”

Rooney, on the peripheries of United's first-team for the past two seasons, on Sunday signed for his former club Everton on a two-year contract.

While his star was definitely on the wane, the fact that at his peak he was a barnstorming striker capable of striking fear into the best sides in the world has not gone unnoticed as thousands of fans have paid tribute to the man who scored 253 goals in 559 appearances for United.

Rooney’s tenure at Manchester United may have witnessed a controversy or two but the club’s record goalscorer clearly bears no grudges and neither do the fans as the Instagram post has over 75,000 likes and 35,000 comments with many declaring him a United legend.
