Confirming the development, a source from SAI said, “A complaint has been received from Sumit Antil… alleging verbal abuse by Coach Mr Naval Singh. The complaint has also been supported by other athletes, including Neeraj Chopra.” The source further clarified that the coach is not an SAI employee and is currently associated with the Athletics Federation of India as part of the national coaching camp.
“The complaint has been received against the coach, and the matter is being duly taken up with the federation,” the source added.
Speaking on the issue during an AFI press conference, World Athletics vice-president Adille Sumariwalla refrained from detailed comments, stating, “The matter is reported, and it is in process, so I do not want to comment on that right now.”
The controversy has also drawn sharp reactions from India’s sporting community. Vinesh Phogat criticised the alleged treatment of athletes in a post on X, writing, “The dignity of those who bring medals for the country will be trampled every time, and the responsible people will remain silent as always. This is the new India, isn’t it?”
The case is expected to be reviewed by the concerned federation, with further action likely following due process.
