In the latest turn of events, Serie A side Roma have handed life ban to a football fan who was indulged in abusing Brazilian defender Juan Jesus on social media.

Roma tweeted an image of the messages the fan had sent and even included details of the account. They confirmed the fact that they had reported the abuse incident to the police.

The move by Italian side Roma comes after anti-discriminatory body Fare had stated that Italian Football authorities and their disciplinary systems were not fit for the job. Director of Fare, Piara Powar, had even gone on to state that the “the rot is deep” and “no-one is taking the issue seriously”. In contrast to his comments, Serie A maintained that it was “seriously and constantly engaged in activities against racism”.

Prior to this Inter Milan forward Romelu Lukaku had to be on the receiving end of monkey chants by Cagliari fans during a Serie A encounter on 2 September. However, those fans were cleared of any racist chanting.
