Rodri wins FIFA World Cup 2026 Golden Ball after leading Spain to title

Spain midfielder Rodri was named the winner of the FIFA World Cup Golden Ball after playing a pivotal role in La Roja’s triumphant 2026 campaign.

Spain, the reigning European champions, defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final at New York-New Jersey Stadium, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal to secure the nation’s second FIFA World Cup title.

Rodri was the heartbeat of Spain’s midfield throughout the tournament, featuring in all eight matches and dictating play from deep. The 30-year-old completed more passes, covered more distance and recorded more player involvements than any other player at the tournament.

His composure in possession, defensive awareness and ability to link defence with attack were central to Spain’s success, as they conceded just one goal across eight matches.

In the final, Rodri delivered another commanding display, completing 101 of his 105 passes, winning 80 per cent of his duels and creating two scoring chances.

The award adds another milestone to Rodri’s glittering career. Having won the Ballon d’Or in 2024 and the UEFA European Championship Player of the Tournament award in 2024, he has now added the FIFA World Cup Golden Ball to his collection. He also joins an elite group of players to have won the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League and the Ballon d’Or.

Spain completed a clean sweep of the major individual honours, with defender Pau Cubarsi winning the Young Player Award and goalkeeper Unai Simon claiming the Golden Glove after keeping seven clean sheets during the tournament.
