Former India cricketer and coach Lalchand Rajput was appointed as the head coach of the United Arab Emirates national cricket team on Wednesday.

He took over from the interim head coach, Mudassar Nazar. Rajput is known for coaching the India team during their successful 2007 T20 World Cup campaign and also served as the head coach of Zimbabwe from 2018 to 2022.

Rajput also coached the Indian team which won the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup held in South Africa.

His first assignment with the UAE team will be the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 ODI tri-series, which includes Scotland and Canada.

The 62-year-old expressed his gratitude to the Emirates Cricket Board for the opportunity and praised the talent and potential of the UAE players. He aims to make the team more consistent and elevate their performance to the next level.

The former Indian cricketer has a wealth of coaching experience, having also coached Afghanistan from 2016 to 2017. He has been involved in administrative roles with the Mumbai Cricket Association.

Before retiring, Rajput played two Tests and four ODIs as a right-handed batter from 1985 to 1987.
