Kylian Mbappe becomes first player to win FIFA World Cup Golden Boot twice

France captain Kylian Mbappe etched his name into FIFA World Cup history by becoming the first player to win the Golden Boot twice after finishing as the top scorer at the 2026 tournament.

Mbappe retained the award he first claimed at Qatar 2022, ending the tournament with 10 goals after scoring twice in France’s thrilling 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place play-off in Miami.

The 27-year-old was in sensational form throughout the tournament, becoming the first player since Germany’s Gerd Muller in 1970 to score 10 goals in a single World Cup. Only France’s Just Fontaine (13 in 1958) and Hungary’s Sandor Kocsis (11 in 1954) have scored more goals at a single edition of the tournament.

Mbappe opened his campaign with a brace against Senegal before scoring twice against Iraq in the group stage. He added another double against Sweden in the Round of 32, netted the winner against Paraguay in the Round of 16 and scored again in the quarter-final victory over Morocco.

Although France fell 2-0 to eventual champions Spain in the semi-finals, Mbappe finished his campaign in style with another brace against England to seal the Golden Boot.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi finished second in the scoring charts with eight goals, while England midfielder Jude Bellingham ended the tournament in third with seven.

Mbappe also received the Bronze Ball after another outstanding World Cup campaign, adding to a remarkable international résumé that now includes back-to-back Golden Boots following his triumph at Qatar 2022.

The French forward, who scored four goals during France’s victorious 2018 campaign and eight in 2022, has further strengthened his legacy as one of the greatest performers in FIFA World Cup history.
