India pacer Akash Deep and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan have been ruled out of East Zone’s Duleep Trophy quarter final against North Zone, as both continue to recover from their respective injuries.
Kishan, who had already missed out on being considered as a replacement for the injured Rishabh Pant in the fifth Test against England at The Oval, is still nursing a left ankle injury sustained after falling off from a bike, which required stitches. With his recovery ongoing at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, medical advice has been to give him additional rest, particularly with India ‘A’ set to host Australia ‘A’ in two four-day games and three 50-over matches next month.

In his absence, Abhimanyu Easwaran, who toured England but did not feature in any of the five Tests, will captain East Zone, with all-rounder Riyan Parag named vice-captain. The squad also comprises two other India internationals in Mohammed Shami, who has played just one first-class game in the last two years, and Mukesh Kumar.
Odisha’s Aashirwad Swain replaces Kishan in the squad, while Jharkhand youngster Kumar Kushagra will serve as the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter.
Akash Deep also ruled out
East Zone have also been dealt another blow with speedster Akash Deep unavailable. The pacer, who missed the fourth Test in Manchester with a groin niggle, is now believed to be dealing with a back-related issue and has been advised to rest. He was one of India’s standout performers on the England tour, claiming 13 wickets in three Tests, including a match-winning 10-wicket haul in Birmingham.
Assam’s Mukhtar Hussain has been drafted in as his replacement.
East Zone opened their campaign against Shubman Gill-led North Zone in the quarterfinal, beginning August 28 at the BCCI CoE grounds in Bengaluru.
