Premier League side Chelsea managed to sign Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater on deadline day, the Blues confirmed.

“Danny Drinkwater is officially a Chelsea player after today completing a transfer from Leicester City and signing a five-year-contract” Chelsea stated on Thursday.

The Foxes confirmed Drinkwater departed for a club record and while the exact figure of the fee has not been revealed, the 27-year-old is said to have cost the reigning Premier League champions a hefty £35 million.

“I’m delighted to be a Chelsea player and can’t wait to get started. It has been a long journey to get here but I am very happy and am looking forward to helping the club win more trophies,” a visibly excited Drinkwater was quoted as saying by the club website.

A hard-working midfielder, not entirely dissimilar to Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante (another acquisition from Leicester City), Drinkwater is a product of Manchester United’s Academy.
After failing to break into the Red Devils starting XI, Drinkwater departed for Leicester in 2012, who were then playing in the Championship.

At the Foxes he quickly became a regular and was integral part of the side that won promotion and of course, famously lifted the 2015-16 Premier League title.

The 5’10 midfielder is Chelsea’s sixth and final signing of the summer, following arrivals of Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Alvaro Morata and Davide Zappacosta.
