The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning to conduct a few women’s T20 exhibition matches, featuring the likes of Mithali Raj, Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur during the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League. The move is said to be the testing ground before launching the women’s IPL.

According to a report in Times of India, Committee of Administrators (CoA) chairman Vinod Rai said, “If we find that we can host a few exhibition matches, then BCCI would like to do it this year. The women cricketers deserve to play IPL.”

Last year, the governing council of IPL had deliberated this proposal in October. According to a report in Cricbuzz, the members had deliberated on the requirement for a women’s event besides an event for the juniors. The members suggested that a plan can be drawn and presented at the subsequent meeting.

Even former Indian cricketer and CoA member Diana Edulji opened up about the idea of women’s IPL and said, “The IPL GC may discuss it for sure. If it’s feasible we will do it. I am all for women’s IPL. But it’s too late this year to come up with a full-fledged event because of time constraint. We need a different window and, therefore, we can’t rush into it. It needs a lot of planning.”

In the recently concluded India’s tour to South Africa, if there was one thing that captured everyone’s attention, it was the demand of the fans to Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to broadcast the women’s matches as well.

Notably, Mithali Raj-led India was not able to win the 2017 Women’s World Cup. Yet when they returned home they were the treated like superstars.
