The cricket world woke up to sad news on Wednesday as former India Under-19 cricketer Amanpreet Singh Gill passed away at the age of 36. His death was confirmed by the Punjab Cricket Association through a post on X. Many former teammates and members of the cricket community later shared messages remembering him and his journey in the game.

A young cricketer who shared the field with future stars

Born in Chandigarh, Punjab, on September 16, 1989, Amanpreet Singh Gill was known as a right-arm medium-fast bowler. During his early cricket days, he played alongside names that later became major figures in Indian cricket, including Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and Manish Pandey.

Amanpreet was part of India’s Under-19 team in 2007. One of the important tournaments in his youth career was the tri-nation Under-19 series between India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. The tournament took place in Sri Lanka and gave several young players a chance to prove themselves on the international stage.

While some of his teammates later became household names, Amanpreet quietly continued his own cricket journey through domestic cricket.

Strong performance in the 2007 U19 tournament

During the 2007 tri-series in Sri Lanka, Amanpreet delivered one of the better bowling performances for India. He picked up nine wickets in five matches.

His professional career later included six First-Class matches, where he claimed 11 wickets.

Punjab Cricket Association pays tribute

The Punjab Cricket Association shared a detailed condolence message after announcing his passing. The association described him as someone who served Punjab cricket with dedication and passion.

In its statement on X, the PCA remembered Amanpreet for representing teams including India Under-19, Punjab, and Kings XI Punjab. The association also noted that he had served as a member of Punjab’s Senior Selection Committee.

Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh react to the news

Former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh also shared a message after hearing about Amanpreet’s death. Yuvraj recalled their early cricket days together and described Amanpreet as a quiet and hardworking player who loved the game.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli wrote on X that he was shocked and saddened by the news. Kohli sent prayers and strength to Amanpreet’s family and loved ones and ended his message with “Om Shanti.”
