The opening pair of Dean Elgar (9) and Heino Kuhn (1) started a tough trail as South Africa were 10 for no loss in four overs, trailing the hosts England by 448 runs at Lunch of Day 2 of the first Test at Lord’s on Friday.

Earlier, England rode on captain Joe Root’s charismatic 190-run knock to post 458 runs in their innings.

Root’s 234-ball knock was decorated by a six and 27 boundaries that kept the English crowd at the edge of their seats throughout his innings.

The 26-year-old skipper stabilised England’s innings after the top-order collapse that saw Alastair Cook (3), Keaton Jennings (8), Garry Ballance (20) and Jonny Bairstow (10) losing their wickets cheaply.

With all-rounder Ben Stokes (56), Root put a 114-run partnership stand for the fifth wicket.

However after the dismissal of Stokes, Moeen Ali also stood tall in front of the wicket for a long while. Ali scored 87 runs off 147 balls, with eight boundaries and established a 177-run partnership stand with Root.

In the lower middle-order, Stuart Broad made a thumping appearance and scored 57 runs off 47 deliveries. Broad stretched his muscles a bit to score two sixes and eight boundaries in his fearless innings.

Speedster Morne Morkel led South Africa’s bowling attack, claiming four big wickets. Fast bowlers Vernon Philander and Kagiso Rabada took three wickets each to support Morkel in pace assault.
