Acharya Balkrishna is back on Facebook with another kitchen remedy. This time it is onion, lemon, and salt for mild stomach pain and gas. He said the combination helps balance digestion and eases discomfort from eating and digestive imbalance. He also told followers to use it in the right quantity and not overdo it.

What the post said

The post kept it simple. Balkrishna said stomach pain usually comes from an imbalance in eating or digestion. When that happens, he said onion, lemon, and salt together can help bring digestion back on track. He called it a traditional home remedy for mild pain and gas. He was clear that the quantity and balance have to be right.

Ayurveda says the same thing. Stomach pain comes from a disturbance in the Vata, Pitta, or Kapha doshas. Bad eating habits, stress, skipping meals, and eating the wrong food combinations all disturb digestive fire. That leads to gas, acidity, and indigestion.

Why onion?

Onion has been used as medicine for thousands of years. It is not just something you chop into a curry.

In Ayurveda, onion is called Palandu. It is valued for balancing Vata and acting as a natural strength promoter. It has a long history of use in digestive problems.

The fiber in onion keeps the gut moving. One type of fiber it contains, called oligofructose, feeds good bacteria in the intestines. Research in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology found this fiber may help prevent and treat certain kinds of diarrhea.

Onion also contains inulin and fructooligosaccharides. These are prebiotic fibers. They build a healthier gut environment and support digestion, nutrient absorption, and even immunity.

There is also quercetin in onion. It is a flavonoid with strong anti-inflammatory properties. On top of that, compounds in onion have been shown to fight harmful bacteria including E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Helicobacter pylori. H. pylori is the bacteria behind most stomach ulcers.

So onion is not just filling your gut. It is cleaning it too.

Why lemon?

Lemon has its own standing in Ayurvedic medicine. It is called Shula Nivarana, which means it relieves abdominal colic pain. It is one of the first remedies Ayurveda reaches for in gastritis and indigestion.

The citric acid in lemon helps soothe the stomach and supports the digestive process. Lemon is also rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. Both protect the stomach lining and reduce inflammation inside the gut.

Lemon also works as a mild diuretic. It pushes the body to shed excess fluids and salt. That is why bloating often goes down after a glass of diluted lemon water.

In Ayurvedic terms, lemon wakes up Agni, the digestive fire. It also increases saliva production. Saliva is the first step in digestion. More saliva means the stomach is better prepared before food even reaches it.

Why salt?

Salt is the third piece. In Ayurveda, rock salt, or sendha namak, is the preferred choice for anything digestive. Table salt is not the same thing.

Rock salt stimulates digestive fire and helps the stomach maintain the right level of hydrochloric acid. It improves appetite, removes trapped gas from the intestines, relieves cramps, and soothes heartburn. It is used in many Ayurvedic gut care formulations because it does not irritate the stomach or make gastritis worse.

Black salt, or kala namak, works similarly. It stimulates bile production in the liver, helps break down food, and reduces bloating and minor indigestion. Combined with lemon and water, it gives the digestive system a gentle reset.

Rock salt and lemon together also have one more traditional use. Ayurveda recommends the combination for controlling vomiting and eliminating stomach worms.

How they work together?

Each of the three ingredients does a different job. Onion feeds good gut bacteria and kills harmful ones. Lemon fires up digestion and protects the stomach lining. Salt manages stomach acid and pushes out trapped gas.

Together they cover most causes of everyday stomach trouble. And everything in this remedy is already sitting in your kitchen. No powder, no packet, no prescription.

Who should be careful?

Balkrishna himself said quantity and balance matter. That caveat is important.

People with acid reflux or GERD should go slow with lemon. The acid in lemon can make heartburn worse. People with gastritis or ulcers should also be careful. Citrus can irritate an already inflamed stomach lining.

Onion is not for everyone either. People with irritable bowel syndrome or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth often react badly to onion. It causes bloating, gas, and pain in those cases. The more onion consumed, the stronger the reaction. Small amounts are safer for sensitive stomachs.

For mild everyday stomach trouble, this remedy has logic behind it. For anything persistent or severe, a doctor is still the right call.
