Akshaya Tritiya is a highly auspicious and holy day for Hindus all across the world. It falls during Shukla Paksha Tritiya in the Hindu calendar month of Vaishakha.

The word ‘Akshaya’ means never diminishing or eternal. Have the benefits of japa, yagna, prayers and charity on this sacred day. These noble deeds will remain with you forever. Akshaya Tritiya is believed to bring prosperity and more wealth if one buys gold on this day. It is also believed that the gold bought on this day will never diminish and would continue to increase in coming future. The day is also considered auspicious to start new ventures. The legend is that any venture initiated on this day continues to grow and brings prosperity. Trees and herbs planted on this day are believed to blossom with abundant fruits and medicinal herbs never falling short for consumption.

Akshaya Tritiya 2019 falls on Tuesday, May 7. Celebrations and rituals marking the festival are carried out differently in different parts of the country. The rituals performed on this day encompass a bath with sacred water, ritualistic worship of Lord Vishnu, chanting, havan, donations to the needy and poor and offerings to deceased ancestors. Because this festival falls in peak summer, articles which give protection from sun and heat like umbrellas, slippers, earthen pots and fans, if given away in charity are considered to accrue a lot of merit.

Few deeds one should do on Akshaya Tritiya to please the Almighty include:

Perform charity: Donation to the needy and underprivileged brings blessings to the donor. One may donate clothes and be blessed with a long life. Donating umbrellas is believed to remove unexpected obstacles from one’s life. Donating any footwear ensures that the donor will never go to hell after death. To attain knowledge, offering buttermilk is considered to be auspicious. To relieve your dead ancestors from agonies, donate coconuts to Brahmins. Betel leaf is donated to invite prosperity into donor’s life. Donating kumkum blesses the donor with higher status in life and married women who donate kumkum are blessed with their husbands getting a longer life.

Donate food and water: Feed hungry humans, street animals and birds. Offer water to the thirsty. The satisfaction you will get after making these good deeds are unmatched to any other better feeling. These offerings would help to attract wealth in your life.

Pray, chant and do yagna: Hindus take to fasting, japa, yagna and helping others on this day. Keeping a day-long fast and worshipping the glory of Lord Vishnu who appeared as Parashurama, (the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu) on the day of Akshaya Tritiya is considered very gratifying. Besides Lord Vishnu, devotees worship Lord Kuber- the God of wealth, Goddess Lakshmi – the Goddess of good fortune and money, Lord Shiva for health and Lord Ganesha for new ventures. Recite Vishnu Sahasranaman and holy scriptures. Distribute prasad to the family members after pooja rituals are over.

Remember your forefathers who are dead: The day is very auspicious to remember dead ancestors who are significant for your protection and success. Offering black sesame seeds in a ritualistic way is the main feature to pay gratitude towards them – place some black sesame seeds on your right palm, pour water on the items and discard them by your thumb remembering your dead ancestors. This ritual is believed to bring good luck, health, wealth and happy relationships.

Recite Bhagavad Gita: Reading Bhagavad Gita is considered very propitious on this day. It is said that one who reads it on this day, gets rid of past sin’s reactions.

Akshaya Tritiya is the only day in a year when the Sun and the Moon are simultaneously at their peak of brightness. The Sun is the signification of soul and the moon represents mind.
