Posting on his social media account on Thursday, Akhilesh Yadav alleged that the BJP and its allies are insulting Sanatan Dharma with their “anti-religious” mindset, causing resentment throughout the Sanatani community. He said that not only ordinary people but even BJP supporters are ashamed of the government’s actions.

In his statement, Akhilesh Yadav said that even the junior employees who are being forced to commit acts of disrespect towards the saints and sadhus are internally disturbed by this. He claimed that there is anger among the employees as well, but they are remaining silent due to the compulsion of their jobs.

He said that if the BJP is not “true to Sanatan Dharma, then what can be expected of them regarding anyone else?” He linked the entire incident to the respect of saints and sadhus and accused the government of adopting an insensitive attitude.

During the Magh Mela on Mauni Amavasya, Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati was going for a holy dip at the Sangam through a traditional palanquin procession. It is alleged that the administration stopped his palanquin procession midway, citing security reasons, and left him at the spot where he was made to disembark.

In protest against this incident, the Shankaracharya reportedly sat on a dharna at the same spot. The Shankaracharya has also accused the police personnel of assault.
