Amid BJP-led NDA’s growing dominance in Indian politics, the saffron party now boasts as many as 140 million members – more than any other political party on the Earth. It has even exceeded the Chinese Communist Party by 40 per cent, according to an Opinion piece in The Washington Post.

The piece further states that more votes have been cast for Prime Minister Narendra Modi than for “any politician in human history, by a margin in the hundreds of millions.”

In the recently-concluded 2026 Assembly elections, the BJP registered a historic victory in West Bengal, marking an end to Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government’s 15-year rule in the state. Apart from this, the NDA alliance retained power in Assam and Puducherry.

“More votes have been cast for Modi than for any politician in human history, by a margin in the hundreds of millions. Modi has comfortably outperformed every other democratically elected leader in the world in Morning Consult’s global leader approval tracker for many years, despite the longevity of his tenure,” wrote Bill Drexel, who is a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute.

Drexel added, “The BJP is consolidating power just as India takes its place among the world’s great powers: largest by population, second-largest by military personnel, on the way to becoming third-largest by economy, and the only nation with the potential to counterbalance China in Asia. Monday’s victory in West Bengal shows that the BJP’s rise has not yet reached its ceiling.”

During the 2026 Assembly elections, the BJP bagged 207 seats in West Bengal, restricting the TMC to 80 seats. Meanwhile, the saffron party secured 82 constituencies in Assam.
