The Well Marked Low Pressure (LP) Area of the Bay has intensified into a Depression, even as yet another LP area formed today, which would further intensify the rainfall activity in Tamil Nadu, especially in the south coastal, cauvery delta and Northern districts in the coming days.

In an update, Met office today said Northeast Monsoon has been active over South Tamil Nadu as rainfall occurred at many places and at most places over South Tamil Nadu and at many places over North Tamil Nadu and over rest of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and over Karaikal area.

Oothu in southern Tirunelvel district and Nalumukku (Tirunelveli) received a maxmum rainfall of 17 cm each during the last 24 hrs ending at 0830 hrs this morning, followed by Kakkachi (Tirunelveli) 14, Manjolai (Tirunelveli) 13, Kothavacherry (Cuddalore) 8, Tiruvarur (Tiruvarur) 7, Bhuvanagiri (Cuddalore), Mimisal (Pudukkottai), Mannargudi (Thiruvarur), Needamangalam (Thiruvarur) 6 each, Parangipettai (Cuddalore) 5, Sethiathope (Cuddalore), Lalpet (Cuddalore), Pappireddipatti (Dharmapuri), Kayalpattinam (Thoothukudi), Nannilam (Tiruvarur), Annamalai Nagar (Cuddalore), Chinnakalar (Coimbatore), Thammampatty (Salem) 4 each.

As the Met office has forecast heavy rains in the coming days as the fresh sytem over Comorin area woudl intensify further, the Tamil Nadu government held discussions with the Collectors of Cauvery delta, North Coastal districts including Chennai and its neighbouring Kancheepuram , Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu, besides south coastal districts of Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanniyakumari and Ramanathapuram via video conferencing and reviewed the precautionary measures put in place.

The government has urged the Collectors to ensure that all preventive measures are put in place and has deployed two State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) Teams to Thoothukudi district, one to Tirunelveli districts for relief and rescue operations.

An Official release said one company each of NDRF team was also deployed in Tirunelveli and Villupuram district for rescue works.

As Squally weather with speed ranging from 45 to 55 kmph and gusting up to 65 kmph will prevail over Gulf of Mannar and Comorin area, the government also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea till November 28 and also asked those in deep sea to return to the shores immediately.

The government is continuously monitoring the rainfall activity from the 24 hr emergency master control Centre in the city, it said.

Yesterday’s Well Marked Low Pressure area over Malaysia and adjoining Strait of Malacca moved west-northwestwards, concentrated into a Depression and lay over Strait of Malacca west of George Town (Malaysia), 290 km east of Kuta Makmur (Indonesia), 740 km east-southeast of Nancowry (Nicobar Islands) and 870 km east-southeast of Car Nicobar (Nicobar Islands) at 0830 hours of today.

It is very likely to move slowly west-northwestwards and intensify further during the next 48 hours. However, accordiing to latest reports, it was unlikely to intensify into a Cyclonic Storm as predicted earlier as the system was expected to weaken in the next 48 hrs.

Under the influence of yesterday’s upper air cyclonic circulation over Comorin area and neighbourhood, a Low Pressure Area has formed over the Comorin and adjoining areas of Southwest Bay of Bengal and Sri Lanka today.

This is the third successive system that has formed and lay centred over the bay. It lay centred over Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of South Sri Lanka and Equatorial Indian Ocean.

It is very likely to move north-northwestwards and become Well Marked Low Pressure area during the next 24 hours and concentrate into a Depression during the subsequent 24 hours.

Yesterday’s cyclonic circulation over Southeast Arabian Sea extending upto 3.1 km above mean sea level has become less marked. This is the first system to form over the Bay a few days back and it was followed by the one at Strait of Malacca and adjoining Andaman Sea and the third one formed over Comorin area today.

Light to moderate rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu and at a few places over South Tamil Nadu and at isolated places over North Tamil Nadu and over Puducherry and Karaikal area with thunderstorm and lightning at one or two places.

Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram districts.

On November 27, heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts. The next da light to moderate rain is likely to occur at a few places over Tamil Nadu and at many places over Coastal Tamil Nadu and at isolated places over Interior Tamil Nadu and over Puducherry and Karaikal area with thunderstorm and lightning at one or two places.

Heavy to very heavy rain is also likely to occur at isolated places over Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam districts and Karaikal area, while heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore and Ariyalur districts.

On November 29, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villuppuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Chennai and Tiruvallur districts and Puducherry and Karaikal area following which an Orange alert was issued.

Heavy rain is also likely to occur at isolated places over Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Ranipet and Vellore districts.

On November 30, light to moderate rain is likely to occur at a few places over Tamil Nadu and at a few places over North Tamil Nadu and at isolated places over south Tamil Nadu and over Puducherry and Karaikal area. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over, Tiruvallur district nieghbouring Chennai.

Heavy rain is also likely to occur at isolated places over Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Villuppuram districts and Puducherry.

On December one, light to moderate rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamilnadu and Puducherry and Karaikal area.
